I’m still waiting for the day when Pretentious Movie Reviews carries a review of this film. In conclusion, watch Tere Naam to have a smile on your face seeing Bhai’s hysterics (read: Hairstyle and Dance) and get moved by his emotional performance in the climatic portion of the film. Clearly, everyone has chose to turn a blind eye to the stalking undertones the film carries.

And Tere Naam is considered to be one of his best performances in his career. It’s fun to see his ascend as an actor to the megastar that he is today. I can’t stop raving or admiring his hairstyle…īhai also shows off his acting and dancing chops in some portions. The hairstyles’s influence was so much that when the film released, in Jodhpur, most of the cine goers turned up with that hairstyle. It’s the most imaginative hairstyle I’ve bore witness to in Indian Cinema, and Bhai carries it with panache. Kudos to Bollywood!įor all the not so good aspects of the film, one GOOD aspect negates all that. Every mentally challenged stereotype is used with aplomb. The people in the asylum look like the extras of Mad Max: Fury Road. Bhai ends up in a asylum 40 minutes before the end, because as the doctor puts “what medical science couldn’t do, the ashram can.” The way the asylum and it’s inmates is portrayed makes you wonder where on Mother Earth such an asylum exists. It’s a trope used to justify Bhai as a rowdy of the college, with a good heart.Īnother problem is the depiction of mental asylums and mentally challenged people. The film also glorifies smoking, for Bhai is seen and can’t live without a Marlboro, even when he’s in a song. Clearly, the writer and director were is a mysogynistic mood, and that doesn’t work for the film, since Bhai has legions of fans who are pretty impressionable.

The whole kidnapping portion makes you wonder that at the end how in the world does she fall in love for him? In the opening of the film, as Bhai is standing for college elections, the manifesto that reads out in the narration says that if Bhai or his friend is elected, touching ‘sundar’ girls will not be met with action. He helps her out in her problems, has a looming presence on her and in the central portion of the film, kidnaps her, just when Chawla’s fiancée convinces her that Bhai is the ONE for her. For most of the film’s 137 minute runtime, Bhai is seen to be forcing the fact on Ms. There are two problems the film carries along like a badge of honour. Characters are stereotyped a bit, dialogues sound a tad sad and inconsistency prevails. Apart from that, the writing, which is clearly copy pasted from the Tamil original, seems half baked. You really feel the crew was stoned as many scenes don’t seem even and the way they’re shot seems like really the crew lived in a psychedelic world. Otherwise, everything, I mean EVERYTHING else is bad.įor starters, the cinematography and editing are two of the film’s biggest failures. It has some great songs (atleast for me) and Bhai does remain the saving grace of the film. Why I’m devoting my precious time to write an analysis on this ‘masterpiece’ is because I found some things peculiar which I would love to share. The film is a remake of the 1999 Tamil hit ‘Sethu’, starring Vikram. I can’t really go on with the plot as you can see it’s not really interesting. After he gets beaten up, he ends up in a mental asylum.

Directed by actor Satish Kaushik, this film stars Salman Khan, popularly known as Bhai, as a college rowdy who falls for a Brahmin girl, played by newcomer Bhoomika Chawla. As you’ve seen from the picture above, it’s the 2003 hindi movie, ‘Tere Naam’. From the past 3 weeks there’s been a movie that’s been garnering my attention.
